Celebrating Identities at Sutton VA Lower School

On Friday 9th November we held a ‘This is me!’ Day. The children listened to parents talk about aspects of their cultural identity. Jeffry Kingsley described his childhood in the Dominican Republic and mum Marieta Van Greunan, talked about her South African identity. They loved the South African lollies!

The day’s activities encouraged pupils to reflect on how their identity is formed and to develop understanding and respect for the identity of others – cultural, religious, skills, interests, hobbies and gender. “Our aim is to create a safe place for all members of our school community to be who they want to be.” Mrs Lucy Chapman.

Children brought in objects which represent an aspect of their identity and listened to stories to provoke discussions. The school is working towards the Rainbow Flag Award which develops a whole school community approach to tackling all forms of bullying and promoting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) inclusion.
